8 Amnesty Proclamations
Попытки северных политиков остановить Гражданскую войну [ Civil War] и достичь компромисса с южанами-конфедератами. Осенью 1863 президент А. Линкольн [ Lincoln, Abraham] выступил с прокламацией об амнистии и реконструкции [Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction], в которой предлагалось помиловать и амнистировать всех конфедератов, которые готовы дать присягу на верность [ oath of allegiance] США и законам о запрете рабства [ slavery]. Восстановил политические права большинства сторонников Конфедерации [ Confederacy], за исключением некоторых лидеров. Тем самым, были отменены законодательные акты, принятые после Гражданской войны [ Civil War] под давлением радикальных республиканцев [ Radical Republicans] и запрещавшие политическую деятельность бывшим конфедератам. Отражал расстановку политических сил в начале 70-х гг. XIX в., когда многие влиятельные политики, в том числе кандидат демократов на выборах 1872 Х.
